What to Watch this Christmas
& My Favorite Christmas Movies

Christmas is full of traditions, maybe it’s getting a pair of pyjama’s and wearing them on Christmas eve, or going to Grandma’s Christmas day, Christmas and tradition go hand in hand. Well, we’re only a few days away from Christmas and (Hopefully) you’re all ready for the big day, and you have some down time before the family arrives. Let me help you in your downtime but suggesting some movies that I use to fill my downtime during the holidays, and Christmas movies for however you’re feeling!
My Twelve Christmas Musts:
These are the twelve Christmas movies I always try to squeeze in during the holidays. Maybe they aren’t great for all but Christmas is full of tradition and nostalgia, so it’s difficult to be objective.

  1. A Muppet Family Christmas (1987)
  2. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
  3. The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992)
  4. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
  5. Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
  6. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)(2000)
  7. The Santa Clause (1994)
  8. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
  9. Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)
  10. Rare Exports (2010)
  11. The Family Stone (2005)
  12. Elf (2003)
The Classics:
Here are some movies your family probably already owns, or watches on TV every year at this special time.  If you don’t, you probably should!
  • It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
  • Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
  • A Christmas Carol (1951)
  • White Christmas (1954)
  • Holiday Inn (1942)
  • The Bishop’s Wife (1947)
The Animated:
They’re animated (or Claymation), but they’re just as good, or better, than any Christmas movie you can think of
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
  • Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
  • How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
  • Santa Clause is Comin to Town (1970)
  • A Chipmunk Christmas (1981)
  • Winnie the Pooh and Christmas too
The Comedies:
These Christmas Comedies are definitely funny, with a little sweetness.

  • National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
  • Elf (2003)
  • The Santa Clause (1994)
  • A Christmas Story (1983)
  • How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
  • Hone Alone (1990)
  • Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
  • Jingle all the Way (1996)
The Best “A Christmas Carol” remakes:
A Christmas Carol has been remade way to many times to count, it’s getting silly, but here are a few that are actually quite enjoyable!
  • The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992) with Michael Caine as Scrooge
  • A Christmas Carol (1984) with George C. Scott as Scrooge
  • Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) with Scrooge McDuck as Scrooge
  • A Christmas Carol (1999) with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge
  • Bugs Bunny’s Christmas Carol (1979) with Yosemite Sam as Scrooge
The Romantic-Comedy Christmas:
A little bit of Christmas, a little bit of comedy, and a little bit of Romance usually makes for a good Christmas movie.

  • Love Actually (2003)
  • The Holiday (2006)
  • The Family Stone (2005)
  • Just Friends (2005)
  • This Christmas (2007)
Bad Christmas Movies:
Alright, this is where my own opinions come in, and I probably shouldn’t even be saying it but here are some Christmas movies I don’t enjoy. I don’t know which other categories to put them in, because I don’t like them, and they don’t deserve it.

  • Christmas with the Kranks (2004) (Good book, Terrible, jumbled movie)
  • Four Christmases (2008) (Loud, annoying and hectic, with spots of humor)
  • The Polar Express (2004) (Great book, the movie adds stupidity)
  • The Santa Clause 2 and 3 (2002 and 2006) (Far to goofy, no sweetness at all)
  • A Christmas Carol (2009) (Oddly scary, gimmicky, and all over the place, not for me)
Adult Christmas Comedies:
It’s Christmas Eve, the kids are in bed, why not throw in a Christmas movie that they can’t watch, and may make you laugh your butt off.
  • Bad Santa (2003)
  • 8 Crazy Nights (2002)
  • A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas
The Non-Traditional Christmas movies:
Long title, but maybe you’re a little worn out of Christmas but don’t want to totally depart from the holiday fully, here are a few titles that are perfect for you!

  • Die Hard (1988)
  • Gremlins (1984)
  • Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
  • Reindeer Games (2000)
  • Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Christmas Horror:
That’s right, there are actually A LOT of Christmas horror movies, if you’re into that sort of thing

  • Rare Exports (2010)
  • Black Christmas (1974) (2006 remake)
  • Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
  • Jack Frost (1997)
